Muralitharan backs Sri Lanka to win World T20 trophy ? Cricket News Update

Legendary Sri Lankan skipper Muttiah Muralitharan has backed Mahela Jayawardene and Co to win the latest instalment of the ICC World T20 Championship, underway in Sri Lanka since September 18, 2012.

Sri Lanka cricket team has been in a stupendous form right from the start of the marquee tournament, winning four of the five-matches played so far. Their only defeat in the global event had come at the hands of South Africa in a rain curtailed Group C match.

The Islanders finished the Super Eight stage unbeaten, after soundly defeating their Group 1 opponents England, West Indies and New Zealand, and must be brimming on confidence going into the tournament semi-final, where they will take on 2009 champions, Pakistan.

The semi-final is going to be a repeat of 2009 World T20 final in England, when the Green Shirts defeated the Islanders at Lord?s to win the title.

Muralitharan, who was part of the Sri Lankan squad that lost to Pakistan in the 2009 final in England, reckons Pakistan is the main threat to Sri Lanka?s bid for their maiden World T20 title.

While speaking to media reporters ahead of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka semi-final, veteran spinner said if Jayawardene and men could manage to defeat Pakistan on Thursday, they will have a 90 percent chance of winning their maiden T20 Cup.

?If Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in tomorrow's semi-final in Colombo, they have a 90 per cent chance of winning the World Twenty20 title,? Muralitharan told the Evening Standard on Wednesday.

?The home team have impressed me more than any other in the tournament and they should believe they can go on to take the trophy,? he added further.

The 40-year-old Kandy off-spinner, who picked up 800 wickets in 133 Tests, backed Australia to win the second semi-final on Friday.

?I see Australia as the favourites against West Indies in the other semi,? said the magical spinner, adding ?But if Sri Lanka beat Pakistan, they can feel confident of clearing that last hurdle.?

The final of the marquee tournament will be played at the same R Premadasa Stadium, on Sunday, October 7.
