Women?earn more when salaries are 'negotiable'

Mark Wilson / Getty Images

President Barack Obama, center, hands Lilly Ledbetter a pen after signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act on Jan. 29, 2009, in the White House.

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

Following President Barack Obama's re-election this week, women's rights and equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter told NBC News she was overjoyed. "I no longer have to worry about the Ledbetter Bill being repealed," she said, referring to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act,?named after her, which increased the timeframe women could sue for pay discrepancies. During the campaign, Republican vice presidential candidate?Paul Ryan criticized the bill, saying it?"was not an equal pay law" and was instead "about opening up the lawsuits."

So why do women earn less than men? There are many theories out there, but one thing is for sure: The lower your salary when you begin your career, the harder it is to catch up.

That's why the experiment?"Do Women Avoid Salary Negotiations?"?published in a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research is so important for working women. The research found that men were more likely to negotiate their starting salary than women, but ? and this is huge ? if applicants were told the wage was "negotiable," not only did the gap evaporate, women outpaced men in asking for a heftier paycheck.

Ledbetter said the findings from the study show that "we are still a long way from equal pay and equal benefits."

The percentage varies depending on which study you use, but women as a whole earn at least a quarter less than what men earn (unless they're city-dwelling, under 30, single and childless, in which case they may earn about 8 percent more?than their male counterparts.) Meanwhile, wages have been stagnant overall. According to Bureau of Labor and Statistics data, hourly earnings fell 1 cent in October, and worker wages have grown at an anemic 1.6 percent rate, slower than inflation.

In the experiment, researchers placed real advertisements for administrative assistant jobs in nine U.S. cities. Those who replied were randomly chosen to receive one of two responses from the employer.

Both thanked the prospective employee for their interest, apologized if they had any unanswered questions, and told them a little bit more about the job, including the hourly salary. However, one of the replies had the word "negotiable" next to the hourly wage.

When not explicitly told the salary was negotiable, men negotiated for a higher salary 29 percent more frequently than women. When it was clear the salary was negotiable, both sexes negotiated much more, but women actually negotiated 9 percent more frequently than men.

"When the rules of wage determination are concrete, women are more likely to negotiate," study co-author Andreas Leibbrandt of Australia's Monash University told NBC News.

What's up with that?

Victoria Pynchon, co-founder of She Negotiates Sales and Training, a Los Angeles consultancy that coaches women on asking for better pay, says women "are still grateful to be offered a job" and that if they ask for more money, they're worried the job offer will be retracted. Women are taught, says Pynchon, that "if a woman asks for something for herself, she's likely to be punished."

Pynchon offered several tips for women seeking to increase their starting salaries. First, figure out your fair market value, using a salary comparison site like glassdoor.com. Then, "ask for more than you want." This is important because women need to both counter the inevitable haggling, as well as overcome their tendency to undervalue themselves. When psyching yourself up for the salary talk, she says, "tell yourself it's not a game, it's a conversation leading to an agreement."

Above all, experts say, don't get caught in the "good girl" trap, obeying the rules written on the board game box. You'll never win that way. Don't wait to be told you're "allowed" to negotiate your salary. Assume that it is expected and ask for what you're worth. After all, that's what the guy sitting next to you is doing.

"With hard work and perseverance," said Ledbetter, "you can get it."

Narsai David Recipe: Pumpkin And Corn Stir Fry, Spiced Oranges ...

BERKELEY (KCBS) ? Here are two fun ideas for Thanksgiving dinner with a really neat presentation. Pumpkins are beautiful to look at, and there are a lot more ways to eat them than just baking a pie.

Slice the pumpkin in half, bake it and the bottom half becomes a bowl to serve a fresh corn and pumpkin stir fry flavored with fresh dill, salt and pepper. Follow that up with spiced oranges, a really simple, low calorie desert that looks delightful when served.

KCBS Food and Wine Editor Narsai David:

Pumpkin and Corn Stir Fry, Spiced Oranges

Narsai?s Pumpkin and Corn Stir Fry
1 pumpkin, 7-8 inches
3 TBS butter or oil
3 green onions chopped, including the green top
2 -3 ears of corn scraped
3 TBS chopped fresh dill
salt and red pepper flakes to taste

Cut pumpkin in half and scoop out seeds. Bake the nicer half at 350 degrees until tender, about 30 ? 40 minutes. Cut the remaining half in half again and save one piece for another time.

Cut away the tough outer skin on the remaining piece. Slice into ?-inch thick slices. Then cut the other way into pieces about ?-inch by ?-inch.

Heat better or oil in a large frying pan. Add green onions, chopped pumpkin and corn and stir fry until just heated through. Add seasoning and stir well. Then spoon into baked shell and serve at table directly out of the baked pumpkin. Be sure to scoop out some of the baked pumpkin along with each serving.

Narsai?s Spiced Oranges
4 navel oranges
juice of 1 lemon
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
6 cloves
6 allspice
1 stick of cinnamon
2 bay leaves
Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur (optional).

Remove the skin of one orange with a zester and set aside for garnish. Cut skin and white tissue from 4 oranges. Cut a cross halfway through the oranges so that they can be spread lotus-like.

Make a syrup with peelings of two oranges, juice of one lemon, water, sugar and spices. Simmer covered for 45 minutes, then strain the boiling syrup over the peeled oranges and cool. Refrigerate overnight or up to a week.

Serve in a bowl with some syrup. Garnish with needle-thin threads of orange zest, and maybe a splash of Grand Marnier.

Another option, spread open the cut end of the oranges, lotus-like, and decorate with a little whipped cream before sprinkling with the zest.

Ex-Goldman trader accused of $118 million loss denies fraud

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A lawyer for a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc trader denied on Friday U.S. civil accusations that his client had defrauded the Wall Street bank of $118 million.

The trader, Matthew Marshall Taylor, was sued on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) which said he had manually entered fake trades in November and December 2007, in an attempt to conceal an $8.3 billion position in futures contracts.

"Matt Taylor is disappointed the CFTC filed a complaint about trades in a Goldman proprietary account which took place five years ago," Ross Intelisano, Taylor's New York-based attorney, said in a statement to Reuters on Friday.

"He strenuously denies all of the allegations," the statement said. "Matt never intentionally entered 'fabricated trades' to conceal any trading activity and Goldman never alleged he did so at the time of his termination or thereafter."

The CFTC is seeking a $130,000 civil penalty against Taylor, who currently resides in Florida. The complaint said Taylor had concocted a scheme of fabricated trades and fake entries that ended up costing the bank $118.44 million.

The lawyer said it was Taylor himself who alerted his managers of the trading losses and not, as the complaint alleges, the other way around.

A Goldman Sachs spokeswoman said on Thursday that the bank had terminated Taylor's employment after his suspected conduct had been discovered, and that customer funds had not been affected.

After leaving Goldman, Taylor went on to work at Morgan Stanley , broker records showed. A Morgan Stanley spokesman said Taylor had left the bank in July.

The case is U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission v. Matthew Marshall Taylor, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No 12-cv-8170.

Best Ways For Treatment Of Blister On Feet - Ayushveda

Best Ways For Treatment Of Blister On Feet Blisters most frequently develop on the feet and are painful enough to prevent one from walking, let alone running. Feet blisters are a harmless condition that targets particularly, the soles, toes, heel and the insides of the feet. They are fluid filled, small or visibly large bumps that form when the trio of heat, friction along with moisture from sweat repeatedly irritates the skin surface.

Wearing a new pair of shoes, making repetitive motions minus adequate skin protection sometimes is sufficient to separate the superficial layer of skin from the deeper ones, leading to formation of a bubble like structure.

The fluid accumulation within the walls of the blister is sterile in composition and cushions the closed skin wound. This prevents exposure of the blister content to the external environment and deeper damage. Regardless of the size, blisters on the feet, undoubtedly, cause a lot of pain and annoyance. Treatment of such blisters on the feet should mainly be focused on soothing the painful symptoms and preventing infection, so as to hasten the process of healing without leaving a scar.

How to Treat Blister on Feet

Take Off Your Shoes and Socks

If the blister erupts due to the frictional activity, it is advisable to take off the shoes, socks or any stocking. This is one of the first things to do that helps take the pressure off the affected area, bringing the level of pain down instantly.

Clean the Area

One of the best ways to prevent the intact blister formed from worsening is to clean the affected and surrounding area. But, before you do so, make sure you wash your own hands first. Clean the raised, fluid filled bubble using a mixture of soap and warm water, followed by a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Another alternative is to apply iodine solution over the blister and the adjacent unaffected skin.

Protective Covering Is Must

As soon as you notice the initiation of blister formation, try to place a protective covering over the affected area. The development of blister is preceded by reddening of the skin due to inflammation and discomfort. Depending on the approximate size of the painful foot blister, you may choose either a sterile gauze pad, or an adhesive bandage.

Best Ways For Treatment Of Blister On Feet

You can even purchase the commercial antiseptic dressings manufactured for treatment of blister from any drug store.?The purpose is to cover the blister and to avoid additional irritation and moisture from the bacteria, thereby reducing any chance of suppuration or pus formation. If it is tricky yo properly place the adhesive bandage, opt for a rolled gauze or elastic bandage.

Drain the Blister

Although it is strongly recommended to keep the blister skin intact so as to keep the risk of infection minimal, the large sized blisters cause a lot of distress, especially those on weight bearing areas such as the bone in the heel area. People with diabetes must go to their doctor instead of attempting to treat the large sized, infection prone blisters all by themselves. After thoroughly dabbing the blistered foot area with soap plus warm water mix, followed by application of disinfectant rubbing alcohol, you need to sterilize a sharp, sewing needle.

This can be done by either dipping the needle in a fresh solution of rubbing alcohol or quickly passing the needle through a flame. Gently place the sterilized needle near the edge of the blister and try your best not to damage or disturb the overlying blister skin. Such a puncture allows the piled up fluid to drain out, thus bringing immediate respite from pressure and pain.

Once the drainage is done, carefully smear a thin layer of antibiotic ointment over the blister and re-cover it using a porous bandage. This prevents bacterial contamination and quickens the process of healing.?Do not forget to replace the dressing with a new one each day. You may need more than a single dressing in case the bandage gets soiled or soaked. In case you notice pus or blood during drainage, you must ask your medical care provider for prescription antibiotics.

Soak Your Feet in Warm Water

Soaking your blistered foot or feet in a shallow tub containing warm water mixed with normal salt or a few table spoons of Epsom salt is effective for the healing process.

It is normal to feel a stinging sensation after immersing the foot or feet in the water tub. Repeat this once in a day for roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. Next, pat your feet dry with a soft towel. You may even use baby powder or corn starch for drawing the water and keeping the blister completely dry.

Sprint buying some US Cellular markets for $480M

(AP) ? Sprint is buying U.S. Cellular markets in the Midwest for $480 million to boost its network capacity in that region.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the third-largest U.S. cellphone carrier, said Wednesday that it is buying spectrum and 585,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. That covers about 10 percent of U.S. Cellular's customer base and includes its key Chicago and St. Louis markets.

The acquisition should give a needed boost to the Overland Park, Kan.-based company's network. Sprint doesn't have as much available spectrum, or space on the airwaves, as the larger carriers do. That holds back its network speeds somewhat.

Chicago-based U.S. Cellular Corp. said the sale will help it focus on its strongest markets.

The acquisition, which remains subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the middle of next year.

Also on Wednesday, U.S. Cellular said its third-quarter net income dropped 43 percent, as the company subsidized sales of new smartphones.

U.S. Cellular earned $35.5 million, or 42 cents per share, down from $62.1 million, or 73 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 3 percent to $1.14 billion.

Sprint shares fell 4 cents to $5.69 in premarket trading. U.S. Cellular Corp. shares were unchanged from Tuesday's close of $39.02.

To do Business with the Swedes - Bearing Consulting - Bearing ...

Up North

So you have arrived in Sweden. You look around to get your first glimpse of the Swedes in their natural environment.

The first surprise is that they actually do not look that much alike ? even if they seem to all dress at H&M ? and that they are not all as blonde and blue eyed as you expected. They are, however, not exactly exuberant and spontaneously outward going.

Still the Same

Sweden changes more rapidly and thoroughly?than most countries. There is no sentimental clinging to history and no fear of trying new products, services and lifestyles, especially if inspired by the United States.

Add to this that around 20 percent of Sweden?s once homogeneous population now consists of first or second generation immigrants, a large part coming from non-European countries. Despite changing norms, some basic rules still apply as to how you should handle your encounters with the Swedes.

Silence is Golden

Silence is the dominant Swedish way of communicating, far from Latin gestures, vivid facial expressions and heated verbal exchanges. The laconic Swede is content to remain of few words.

When the Swedes are talking, the language is simple and direct. The message is the only important thing and no particular effort is made to enrobe the bare facts with polite or entertaining conversation. You do no need to try to be witty or eloquent. Just say straight out what you think in a simple fashion.? Not very amusing?? Well that is the price to pay for the uncomplicated social life.

No Waste

Efficiency is, if anything, the main religion in a country where The Swedes around the year 1000 accepted Christianity reluctantly and where it has more or less disappeared without leaving much traces, a thousand years later.

?Swedish efficiency? consists of a constant strife for the simplest solution, the most direct method and the least usage of unnecessary resources. Be well prepared, have the tools within easy reach, don?t complicate things and get it done ? as simple as that! A pragmatic attitude.

It Works

This search for common ground gives some strengths. The Swedes are a close-knit community where little time is lost on unnecessary quarrels.? It probably accounts for much of the successes of Sweden in the XIX and XX century: the smooth reforms and peaceful history, the absence of bloody revolutions and civil wars. Boring?? Well that is for you to decide.

The Future of Mankind

The Swedes ? who think themselves anything but arrogant ? believe their own culture is the most rational. And thus the best. Other cultures are not just different, but situated on a historically less advanced level. A?condescending Swedish tolerance will, however,?be generously applied to other cultures.

Don?t Show-off

The Swedish culture is profoundly and obsessively democratic. It is seen as offensive and ridiculous to behave as one was more worth than others, more brilliant, more fortunate. Certainly there are upstarts in Sweden who flaunt their opulence or want to prove their superior intelligence or knowledge but it is sneered at in traditional Swedish circles.

Grey

You should dress, talk, behave, think and consume as everyone else.

Assemble your IKEA-furniture, dress at H&M, drive a Volvo station wagon, and enjoy the same national food.

Friendly ? but not Polite

The Swedes are normally friendly, but it is not necessarily to be polite in any formal way. You might find the Swede rude, insensitive and too pushy ? but this is a misinterpretation of the fact the Swede doesn?t want to waste neither your time nor his own.

Broken Confidence

Sweden is a country where confidence rules. Often to the limit of the reasonable. Everything said is believed to be the truth. This na?ve gullibility is often taken advantage of by people coming from cultures where the truth is much more negotiable. But ? important to note! Once the confidence is broken the Swede feels he or she?has been personally betrayed. The Swede will not use harsh words but he will never again give his confidence to the person in question. Abrupt, not announced for everyone to hear, but for ever. In some cultures you have an argument, emotions flare up and then everything is forgotten half an hour later. Not so in Sweden. The injury and hurting words stay on forever. . So tread with care.

A No is a No is a No

If you negotiate prices and conditions? ? please put your initial offers very close to what you actually want to achieve. The Swede?s dislike -?or just simply cannot perform ? the commedia dell?arte of a long negotiation.? Where big margins are slowly sliced away after bargaining. When a Swede says no he means ? No. No surprise there. End of story. Nothing more to be said. It is not a diabolic business stratagem to encourage you to lower the price further. You are eliminated. Take the next flight home.

No Shouting

Do not raise your voice, make aggressive comments or overly vivid gestures with your hands. Try to be soft spoken, to the point, simple. Do not attempt to interpret ?what is said behind what is said? by the Swedes. What is said is all there is to it. So do not attempt to send or catch any subtle messages. Be clear and simple.

It has been said that only seven percent of a person?s message is transmitted by the voice.? The rest is all in various signs. In Sweden these signs should state you are calm, controlled, friendly and unpretentious.

I am Just Like of You

Don?t try to attract too much attention to yourself. Neither in dress, manners nor by too clever by half arguments. Avoid to repeatedly say ?I think, I have decided, I selected this? etc. Rather talk about your team.

Sweden is a country where the team is more important than the person at the top. (Though there are ways for the boss to decide, but by small means.)

If this gives the impression that Swedish decisions are clear and easily understood for non-Swedes, I have not made myself clear enough. (How typically Swedish!)

Why is that?

Direct and Indirect

The Swedes between themselves understand what they mean without spelling it out.

The fears of conflict, the perpetual avoidance of heated exchanges are consequences of the strongest taboo in Sweden: Don?t say no.

The Swedes in an intuitive and indirect way ? mystic if it wasn?t that Swedes are?very non-mystic ? arrive collectively at a joint solution. Various humms, nods and ja ja-sounds are used to manifest that everyone agrees. All participants understand what has been decided. No need to confront opinions or to say things without ambiguity. This saves time.

All created Equal

The hierarchical system is not seen as?important in Sweden. So please address the young specialist in a t-shirt and sneakers at the end of the table and listen to him or her with the same attention as you do to the CEO of the company.

Do not Underestimate the Natural Swede

Do not underestimate the Swedes. The simple style, the lack of?clever conversation, the dress-down style does not mean you deal with simple people.? They tend to be excellent hard-working and systematic specialists in their fields.

Just let me Finish

Let the Swedes finish their sentences.? Do not interrupt. Allow for a small pause? ? to be sure the Swede has finished ? and then say what you want to say.

?
