'What God Has Wrought' - a documentary on Chuck Smith and the Calvary Chapel Movement

By Janey DeMeo
Special to ASSIST News Service

VISTA, CA (ANS) -- One of the greatest spiritual revivals to sweep America, even the world, was the Jesus Movement. It happened back in the late sixties and early seventies during the hippy era, and one of the key players was Chuck Smith.

"What God Has Wrought" tells the story of Chuck Smith and the birth of the Jesus Movement and Calvary Chapel, a then small Southern California church that he had just become the pastor of.

It's a story that has marked history in remarkable ways, changed lives radically; a story well worth hearing (and seeing).

During that period of upheaval in America, most hippies were young people reacting to society and tradition and in pursuit of authenticity, meaning, love and peace. Many thought they'd found it in drugs, revolutionary music and their free-love lifestyles.

The older generation, for the most part, viewed them as a bunch of grungy losers, but not Kay, wife of Pastor Chuck Smith. She saw them not as losers but as lost. And she wanted to help them find their way back home.

Chuck Smith found himself acquiescing to his wife's compassion and soon found his church, Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, filling up with barefoot, longhaired "seekers"-week after week. Men such as Greg Laurie, Mike MacIntosh, Raul Ries, and many other now prominent Calvary Chapel pastors.

These young people were hungry for truth, peace and love. They wanted to belong to a cause bigger than themselves. They found it at Calvary Chapel within the simple expository teaching of Chuck Smith, teaching that simply pointed them to Jesus. They were excited and passionate about their newfound faith, and eager to express it.

This led to the birth of contemporary Christian music which sounded a lot like an amalgam of Beatles and Beach Boys-a very sixties sound-but with Christian words. It was a musical revolution and it caused quite a stir amongst the traditional crowd.

The recently released documentary, "What God Has Wrought" is a riveting account of how Calvary Chapel became the catalyst for the Jesus Movement. It includes interviews with Chuck Smith, testimonies from those who were transformed by though this outpouring, flashbacks to actual church services, testimonies and clips of the Jesus Movement bands such as Love Song.

Talking about his role during the Jesus People movement, Chuck Smith said, "I didn't want to direct the Holy Spirit, I just wanted to find out how the Holy Spirit was moving and get in the boat and move with him."

It is heart stirring, inspiring and well worth watching. The DVD has also just won "Best Documentary 2012" at The International Christian Film Festival in Irvine, California on October 6th, 2012.

'OZ' - The 'Other' Side of the Rainbow: Homosexuality Facts

I have added this page on homosexuality facts, because, when learning of your child or loved one's sexuality difference, there are a lot of concerns you need clarified.
This is a normal proceedure that we as parents need to go through.

This page about homosexuality facts will hopefully clear up some of the queries you may have and help educate you also.

I have already listed a page of FAQ's and now I will clear up some of the myths with some facts.

Myth.

* Most Lesbians Or Gays Regard Themselves As Members Of The Opposite Sex.

Fact.

The majority, if not all gays and lesbians are very happy with their gender. In many ways, their sexual identity is seen as a celebration and an affirmation of their gender, not rejection of it.
People often confuse homosexuality with transsexuality and or transvestism. Transsexual people feel as if they were born into the wrong body and should be the opposite gender. Transvestites are people who often dress in the clothing of the opposite sex.
Most transvestites are heterosexual.

Myth.

* Homosexuality Is A Form Of Mental Illness And Can Be Cured.

Fact.

The American Pshychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of official mental illnesses in 1973. The American Psychological Association followed suit in 1974. And so have most Psychiatric and psychological associations around the world.

Myth.

* All Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender People Can Be Identified By Certain Mannerisms Or Physical Characteristics.

Fact.

Only a very small percentage of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people have stereotypic mannerisms and characteristics.
As with heterosexuals, homosexuals and transgender people come in many shapes, sizes and different colors. It is fair to say that some heterosexuals portray a variety of the so-called gay stereo typical characteristics.

Myth.

* Lesbians And Gays Could Be Cured By Having "Good Sex" With A Member Of The Opposite Gender.

Fact.

Remember, you cannot cure homosexuality. Many gays and lesbians have had satisfying heterosexual sex in their life time, but most gays and lesbians would never choose to be sexually active with members of the opposite sex and would resent and challenge the idea that heterosexuals have a corner on the market of "good sex".

Myth.

* You Are Either Heterosexual Or Homosexual. Very Few Are Bisexual.

Fact.

The studies of Dr Alfred Kinsey and his associates are most frequently cited on this question.
Their data suggests that, in fact, few people are predominately heterosexual or homosexual. Most people fall somewhere along the continium between these two ends of the scale, and therefore have the capacity to experience both affection and sexual feelings for members of both sexes.

Myth.

* Gay, Lesbian And Bisexual People Should Not Be Teachers Because They Will Try To Convert Their Students To Their Life Style.

Fact.

It is impossible to convert heterosexuals to become homosexuals as it is just as impossible the other way around.
Based on what is known about sexual attraction, this is simply not possible.

Myth.

* The Majority Of Child Molesters Are Gay Men And Women.

Fact.

Statistics have shown that paedophelia or child molestsation is perpetrated by mainly heterosexuals.
In fact, over 90% of all reported molestations are carried out by heterosexual males.

Myth.

* No One Knows What Causes Homosexuality.

Fact.

This is a complicated and controversial issue.
To date there has been no real conclusive research that shows the causes of either homosexuality, bisexuality or for that matter, heterosexuality. Some believe it is predetermined genetically or hormonally. Others believe that we are all predisposed to all variations of sexual and affectionate behaviour and learn our sexual orientation.

Myth.

* In A Homosexual Relationship, One Partner Usually Plays The Role Of The Husband And The Other Plays The Role Of The Wife.

Fact.

This is not neccessarily so. Most gay and lesbian couples work to develop relationships based on principles of equality and mutuality where they are loved for who they are and not for the roles they play.
This comes back to sterotypical role play. They are ususally just two men sharing roles and two women sharing roles.

Myth.

* One Homosexual Experience As An Adolescent Will Play A Large Part In Determining Whether A Person Will Be Homosexually Orientated As An Adult.

Fact.

Many gay and lesbian people have had early heterosexual experiences but identify as gay or lesbian. This can be said the same for many heterosexual people who have had sexual experiences with a person of the same sex but continue to define themselves as heterosexual.
Sexual orientation for most people goes well beyond just sexual acts.

Myth.

* Homosexuality Does Not Exist In Nature, Therefore It Is Not Natural.

Fact.

Historians tell us that homosexuality has existed since the earliest of human societies. Anthropologists report that homosexuals have been a part of every culture.
One study of non-western cultures, reported that 64% of the respondants considered homosexuality as "normal and socially exceptable".

It is also a well known fact that same sex behaviour is "natural" between animals.

Myth.

* All Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual And Transgender People Choose To Be That Way.

Fact.

The only place where choice seems to come into play is when they decide how they will acknowledge their identity. Choosing if and how to 'come out' and choosing who to tell.

I hope these facts have been helpful.

(AP) ? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer can't afford to be wrong about Windows 8.

On Thursday in New York, Microsoft unveiled a dramatic overhaul of its ubiquitous Windows operating system. It will go on sale Friday, fused into more than 1,000 PCs and other devices. If it flops, the failure will reinforce perceptions that Microsoft is falling behind competitors such as Apple, Google and Amazon as its stranglehold on personal computers becomes less relevant in an era of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

If Ballmer is right, Windows 8 will prove that the world's largest software maker still has the technological chops and marketing muscle to shape the future of computing.

"This is going to be his defining moment," said technology industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. Ballmer's "legacy will be looked at as what he did or didn't do with Windows 8. If Windows 8 is not a success, a lot of people will be looking for Microsoft to make a change at the CEO level."

Windows 8 is designed to run on PCs and tablet computers, heralding the biggest change to the industry's dominant operating system in at least 17 years. It also marks the first time that Microsoft has made touch-screen control the top priority, though the system can still be switched into the familiar desktop mode that allows for control by keyboard and mouse.

Ballmer sees Windows 8 as the catalyst for a new era at Microsoft. He wants the operating system to ensure the company plays an integral role on all the important screens in people's lives ? PCs, smartphones, tablets and televisions.

"You are going to love the new Windows," Ballmer promised during a Thursday presentation. At other points of his speech, Ballmer hailed the new PCS running on the "bold, innovative" system as the best ever made.

Early reaction has been mixed. Some reviewers like the way the system greets users with a mosaic of tiles displaying applications instead of relying on the desktop icons that served as the welcome mat for years. Critics say it's a confusing jumble that will frustrate users accustomed to the older versions, particularly when they switch to desktop mode and don't see the familiar "start" button and menu.

Windows 8 will hit the market backed by an estimated $1 billion marketing campaign. The advertising frenzy is just one measure of how important Windows 8 is to Microsoft's future.

Ballmer's margin for error is slim after being consistently outpaced by Apple and Google in his nearly 13 years as CEO. During his tenure, Microsoft's stock has lost nearly half its value, wiping out more than $200 billion in shareholder wealth.

But the company's board hasn't expressed any public dissatisfaction with Ballmer, who is Microsoft's second-largest shareholder with a 4 percent stake worth $9 billion. Only his good friend and predecessor, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, owns more of the company's stock. Gates has a 5.5 percent stake.

Since Ballmer succeeded Gates as CEO in January 2000, Microsoft's annual revenue has nearly quadrupled to $74 billion and expanded into lucrative new territory with its popular Xbox 360 video game console, which has given the company a platform for delivering services to television sets. But Microsoft has been slow to respond to technology shifts and has made some costly missteps trying to catch up.

Some of the best-known blunders include the company's iPod clone, the Zune, and its $6.3 billion acquisition of Internet ad service aQuantive.

Ballmer, 56, has spent most of his life at Microsoft. He was attending Stanford University's graduate school of business in 1980 when Gates, a former classmate at Harvard University, persuaded him to drop out and become one of the startup's first 30 employees. He brought more business savvy to the operation just as the company began providing an operating system for IBM Corp.'s first personal computer.

Just two weeks before Ballmer took over, Microsoft's stock reached its peak price. The dot-com bust quickly deflated that market value, and the company became locked in antitrust battles in the U.S. and Europe that distracted management for years.

The biggest question hovering over Windows 8: Is it innovative and elegant enough to lure consumers who are increasingly fond of smartphones, tablets and other sleek gadgets? Those mobile devices have been setting industry standards while Microsoft engineers have spent two years designing a new operating system.

And Windows 8 must address not only the upheaval in the computing market since Windows 7 came out in 2009, but also have the flexibility to adjust to future shifts in technology before Microsoft releases another version in two or three years.

"It doesn't seem like Microsoft is really pushing consumers into the future with Windows 8," said Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. "What Microsoft has done is like buying a pair of shoes for a kid. The shoes may fit exactly right today, but those shoes probably won't fit six months from now."

Previous versions of Windows and other Microsoft products such as Office are so deeply embedded in companies and government agencies that Microsoft is still assured a steady stream of revenue from that segment of the market. That loyal base of customers is one of the reasons that Microsoft is expected to earn $25 billion on revenue of $80 billion in its current fiscal year ending next June.

"This isn't a company that is on the edge of extinction, like some people would have you think," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. "What we are seeing with Windows 8 is classic Microsoft. They let the (technology) market lead and then they follow."

But investors want to see Microsoft do something more. The nagging fear on Wall Street is that the PC industry is past its prime and heading into a gradual decline that will pull down Microsoft, too.

The signs of decay have been proliferating since Apple released the iPad in 2010, hatching a tablet computer market that has combined with an already vibrant smartphone market to siphon away technology spending that used to go toward the latest PCs.

Worldwide PC sales year are expected to decline this year for the first time since 2001, according to the research firm IHS iSuppli. It's a drop of just 1 percent, but it underscores a troubling trend that has been hurting Microsoft.

The shift to mobile devices has whittled Microsoft's worldwide share of the computing device market from 67 percent in 2008 to about 30 percent today, estimates Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett. Thanks to its Android software for phones and tablets, Google is now the leader with a 40 percent share of the computing device market. Apple stands at 20 percent.

Analysts don't expect Microsoft's corporate and government customers to immediately embrace the new system, no matter how much it's hyped. About half of this traditionally cautious group of customers still haven't upgraded to Windows 7. Most analysts expect companies and government to hold off on switching to Windows 8 for at least another year.

Ballmer hopes to accelerate the changeover by making Microsoft's Office software suite more compelling, with the help of two major acquisitions.

Microsoft bought the video chat service Skype for $8.5 billion last year and in June agreed to pay $1.2 billion for Yammer, a service the builds social networking services within companies. Both are expected to become key features within Office to make it easier for workers to connect and collaborate with their peers and customers.

Ballmer also has won praise from analysts for striking potentially fruitful partnerships with Yahoo Inc. and Nokia. Microsoft now provides Yahoo with much of the same technology that runs its Bing search engine. The Yahoo deal provides Microsoft with 12 percent of the revenue from the ads shown alongside search results on Yahoo's website.

The Nokia alliance ensured Windows 8 would be the operating system on that company's latest line of smartphones, a potentially valuable platform if Nokia is able to regain some of the market share it has lost in mobile phones during the past five years.

(Microsoft has also joined with The Associated Press to use AP content in Windows 8 news applications.)

But none of that has yet restored the luster Microsoft had on Wall Street when Gates was in charge.

Ballmer's initially dismissed emerging threats from Google and Apple. He consistently pooh-poohed Google as a one-trick company during its early years and in 2007 declared: "No chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share."

Those were some of his biggest mistakes, detractors say. Google quickly made important inroads in Internet video, online maps, email and mobile computing and contributed to the damage that the iPhone and iPad have done to Microsoft and its partners in the PC market.

Apple's meteoric rise has been especially painful for Microsoft. When Steve Jobs returned to run Apple in 1997, the company was so bad off that it needed a $150 million infusion from Microsoft to stay afloat. Now Apple has a market value of $570 billion ? more than double Microsoft's $235 billion.

On Tuesday, Apple got a chance to upstage Microsoft when CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPad Mini, a smaller and less expensive version of its top-selling tablet.

On Thursday in New York, Ballmer got his chance to herald the arrival of the most important product of his reign. The response to Windows 8 may determine whether it turns out to be the opening act in his vindication or one of his final moments in the spotlight.

Windows 8: The Most Confused OS Launch Ever | Dr Dobb's

After making a courageous and daring bet to rework its entire product line and push itself into a completely new direction, Microsoft's disorganized product launch threatens to overwhelm any chance of success.

On Friday, Microsoft will release Windows 8, the completely revamped version of its flagship operating system. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this product to the company. It has been in development for several years as the vehicle that will carry the Redmond giant into the post-PC era. It's a bold bet creating an entirely new look and feel for portable devices and aiming to bring consumers (especially young consumers) into Microsoft's traditional customer base of business users.

I've been using the OS on a tablet and I like the colorful tiles and easy swiping from task to task. It's simple to navigate the UI and get quickly to the apps you want. However, when I turn my slate into a real working device, rather than a browser or entertainment platter, I have to forgo the flashy new look and revert back to the Windows 7 look and feel that's buried under the covers. In fact, I do much of my work there. The problem for many consumers, if recent articles in the mainstream press are accurate, is that almost no one seems to know that the Windows 7 look and feel can be enabled for desktops and tablets. A recent article in The New York Times about how confused Windows 8 users were with the new interface mentioned the option only in passing and even then without any conviction of its signal importance. Ignorance of the presence of the traditional Windows UI is the first of many, many failures of Microsoft's planning, marketing, and PR departments.

Another failure is that the new UI's name is undecided. It was "Metro," as we all know. But to avoid a contretemps with a company partner in Europe, Microsoft had to forgo the name and scramble a new one just months before release. Right now, it's officially the "Windows 8 look and feel," which thoroughly guts the point I've just made about explaining the two UI options. Internally to Microsoft, "Metro" is referred to as "Modern" ? a term that certainly won't sparkle anyone's eyes.

Even though the official release of Windows 8 occurs later this week, the company released its Surface tablet last week with something other than Windows 8 on it. It was running Windows RT, which is the stripped-down ARM version of Windows 8. Consumers are rightly flummoxed by this bifurcation of brands. It gets worse: The tablets are technically running a Windows RT tablet with the Windows 8 look and feel ? but not running Windows 8, nor will they ever be able to. If you want the Windows 8 UI to actually run on Windows 8, instead of Windows RT, you have to wait for the next round of Surface tablets several months hence. A consumer is going to understand this?

If my observation that Windows RT is the ARM version of the OS sounds odd, it might be because you're thinking of WinRT, which is an entirely different thing. That is the core API to which developers need to program to get the unique benefits of Windows 8. It runs on both x86 and ARM. WinRT and Windows RT ? not the tight branding quality we're used to, are they?

I'll leave off discussion of the Nokia Lumia phones that run the Windows 8 UI today on Windows Phone 7.5. However, those phones can't be upgraded to Windows Phone 8. Phone buyers will surely not view their existing "Windows 8 UI" phones with much love after being told that.

The programming aspects of Windows 8 are hardly cause for cheer. The famous slide released late last year that showed the architecture of Windows 8 and associated development technologies was revised multiple times. It's been revised again since then. I expect it will be clarified and revised again at the upcoming Build conference. The Visual Studio 2012 product, as I discussed in a recent review, shows the conflicts between the "Metro" metaphor and the traditional Windows 7 look and feel ? ultimately settling on a near-monochrome scheme with tab names using all-caps. If this UI does indeed point the way for the new desktop apps, as Microsoft itself has suggested, the company's business apps are in very serious trouble.

I'll stop here, as my point is clear. I've attended dozens of OS launches ? from Microsoft, IBM, Linux vendors, Novell, Sun, and a half dozen UNIX vendors. They all had one common element: Everyone sang from the same hymnal and that hymnal used clear terminology to express the important new features. Microsoft used to lead the way in this. Everybody at the company from the senior execs down knew the lyrics to the current release and could recite them without deviating one iota from the company line. Today, it's a chaotic scene that is, in all respects, a branding disaster ? one brand with several names, incompatible OS versions, competing product names, confused design principles, and hidden features. I have never seen a major company so unprepared for a major product launch as Microsoft is today.

As I said earlier, this product release is an inflection point that is crucial to the company's long-term relevance. And the company knows that. And so they did the one thing we never see big companies do when their business is shrinking: They made a bold move, a brilliant stroke, and bet the whole company on it. Nobody has the courage to do that anymore! But, they did! And now, due to horrid execution, they appear to be blowing the whole thing. If Windows 8 fails, there is no doubt that, as the desktop franchise shrinks, Microsoft will be pushed into the smaller, server-side business market. There, it will be permanently consigned to the ranks of legacy software vendors. Ugh!

Captive Beluga Whale Imitated Human Voices

The mimicry of the whale, now deceased, was no match for that of a parrot, but is an example of vocal learning, nonetheless

By Ewen Callaway of Nature magazine

?Who told me to get out?? asked a diver, surfacing from a tank in which a whale named NOC lived. The beluga?s caretakers had heard what sounded like garbled phrases emanating from the enclosure before, and it suddenly dawned on them that the whale might be imitating the voices of his human handlers.

The outbursts ? described today in Current Biology and originally at a 1985 conference ? began in 1984 and lasted for about four years, until NOC hit sexual maturity, says Sam Ridgway, a marine biologist at National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego, California. He believes that NOC learned to imitate humans by listening to them speak underwater and on the surface.

A few animals, including various marine mammals, songbirds and humans, routinely learn and imitate the songs and sounds of others. And Ridgway?s wasn?t the first observation of vocal mimicry in whales. In the 1940s, scientists heard wild belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) making calls that sounded like ?children shouting in the distance?. Decades later, keepers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada described a beluga that seemed to utter his name, Lagosi.

Ridgway?s team recorded NOC, who is named after the tiny midges colloquially known as no-see-ums found near where he was legally caught by Inuit hunters in Manitoba, Canada, in the late 1970s. His human-like calls are several octaves lower than normal whale calls, a similar pitch to human speech. After training NOC to 'speak' on command, Ridgway?s team determined that he makes the sounds by increasing the pressure of the air that courses through his naval cavities. They think that he then modified the sounds by manipulating the shape of his phonic lips, small vibrating structures that sit above each nasal cavity.

?We do not claim that our whale was a good mimic compared to such well known mimics as parrots,? but it is an example of vocal learning nonetheless, the paper concludes. ?It seems likely that NOC?s close association with humans played a role in how often he employed his human voice, as well as in its quality.?

Andy Foote, a marine ecologist at the University of Copenhagen who has studied vocal learning in killer whales, agrees that NOC's calls sound human. Belugas are known as the 'canaries of the sea,' because of the wide range of their vocal calls. Killer whales, by contrast, produce a more limited range of sounds that rarely stray from the calls of their group, Foote notes, which could explain why Shamu and other captive orcas have never mimicked human speech.

Those looking to hear NOC for themselves will have to settle for these recordings. He died several years ago.

Ex Venezuelan VP says he met with Fidel Castro

(AP) ? (AP) ? Former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said Sunday that he met with aging revolutionary icon Fidel Castro for five hours and showed The Associated Press photos of the encounter, quashing persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was on his deathbed or had suffered a massive stroke.

Jaua also confirmed that the 86-year-old retired Cuban president personally accompanied him to the Hotel Nacional after their meeting Saturday, in which they talked about politics, history, culture and tourism.

"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said Sunday, adding that Castro looked "very well."

Jaua showed a photograph of himself seated in a minibus along with the former Cuban leader, Castro's wife, Dalia Soto del Valle, a hotel executive and several other people. The photo shows Jaua and Castro smiling broadly, and the former Cuban leader is wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat.

The public appearance was Castro's first in months. A top Hotel Nacional executive told the AP earlier Sunday how Castro had dropped off the Venezuelan guest, then stayed on to chat with hotel staff.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," commercial director Yamila Fuster said. Fuster was not present, but hotel director Antonio Martinez is seated next to Castro in the photo shown by Jaua.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumors gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a top ally, on his Oct. 7 electoral victory. The former Cuban leader has not appeared since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI, and he has also ceased writing his once-constant opinion pieces, the last of which appeared in June.

Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise. Late last week, a Venezuelan doctor purported to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke, but the same doctor has previously claimed knowledge that turned out to be false.

Sunday's news from the Hotel Nacional appeared to be Cuba's attempt to hit back against what it says are false and malicious rumors. A letter attributed to Castro was published Thursday by Cuban state media. In it, he congratulated graduates of a medical school on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Two close family members of Castro have also recently denied he is in grave condition. Juanita Castro, the former leader's sister, told the AP in Miami that reports of her brother's condition are "pure rumors" and "absurd."

Son Alex Castro told a reporter for a weekly Cuban newspaper that his father "is well, going about his daily life."

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.

White House prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to prevent that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor's statement said.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election. The New York Times reported that the U.S. and Iran have agreed for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing. Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel. Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort.

Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran. He says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

How much will HDTVs cost on Black Friday? A lot less, says expert

7 hrs.

This year will go down as a very bad one for TV makers. Sony, Panasonic and Sharp posted huge financial losses, dragged down by lower worldwide demand due to the economic slowdowns in Europe and China.

The U.S. HDTV market has also been sluggish. Samsung, Sony and LG instituted Unilateral Pricing Programs?on mid- to high-end models, requiring their dealers to charge the same price. This undoubtedly negatively affected sales. To counter, set makers employed a number of periodic promotions including instant rebates and/or bundles with free Blu-ray players or sound systems.

We at HD Guru consulted our industry contacts, surveyed the best current deals and checked last year?s Black Friday deals to come up with our Black Friday predictions. This year, Black Friday falls on Nov. 23, and will be the biggest shopping day of the year. We?ve listed the HDTVs by size, features and brand.

Before you buy a new HDTV, check out our 2012 list to make sure you are not going to pay more than you should have.

While 32?inches remains the best-selling screen size, the 39- to 42-inch class is closing in on sales volume. While inventories of these two classes are not too bloated, the hottest deals will be in the 55-inch and larger screen sizes as the big screens are not moving as fast as set makers projected.

This segment now has no-name brands competing with the legacy brands, with a number of new entries in the 55- and 60-inch size classes. Vizio just added a 70-inch TV to compete with Sharp, the only other maker of this screen class.

As in recent years, the online e-retailers will be very aggressive with their Black Friday deals and will follow with Cyber Monday deals on Nov. 26. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Best Buy plans to match Amazon and other retailers this holiday season, (with a few yet to be specified exceptions). This could be a game changer and really heat up the competition. We will follow up, once Best Buy?s holiday policies are released.

For those of you considering a Vizio or a no-name TV, please read our disposable TV article here. Thinking about an extended warranty? Learn how to get the best deal and how to get up to a one year extended for free here.

Grow Your Brand With These Top Internet Promotion Tips

Friday, October 19th, 2012 at 6:30 pm ?

There are countless ways to market your business. A few of the top ways to sell through Affiliate marketing include search engine optimization, pop-up ads and articles. If you think web marketing is a good match for you or your business needs, read on for some very useful advice.

Be sure that the emails you send to your mailing list are personalized. A colorless, bland email is easy for a customer to ignore and delete. Aren?t you sick of bulk emails? When you personalize the email, that will make you stand out from all the other people sending email.

Creating internal links which include keywords is another good SEO practice. You want the people that visit your site to stay there, so give them a reason. Within your website?s content, provide other links that are relevant to what the visitor is looking at. This will keep your viewers on your site and improve search results.

Consider that the appearance of your business website is as vital to your business as a brick and mortar store?s appearance is. Make sure you always test your links and ads to ensure that they work for your visitors. Customers visiting a physical store will be irritated with breakdowns that slow down their shopping. At an online store, customers will have even less patience and are more likely to abandon their purchases if they encounter bugs.

Avoid making your website too flashy, as this can be distracting for visitors. When someone comes to your website you have about five seconds to capture their attention and make them want to stay. Any longer, and they?ll give up on your site and try something else.

You will avoid a lot of disappointment if you think of your Online marketing project as a hobby rather than a full-time occupation. If you find that you are very good at this, than you may want to consider making it a career, but at first it should be more for fun than profit.

You can improve your online business by carefully analyzing your top competitors. Check out the websites of similar businesses and see what it is that they can improve upon. If your competitors are neglecting a certain approach, take advantage of this by developing this aspect of your website.

A great way to play to your customers is to offer a variety of special deals on the ordering page of your site. If your customer places an order, offer them an additional product at reduced cost to maximize the sale and increase profits. You can get rid of additional stock, boost sales and make the client feel that received a great deal.

Use emotional descriptions in your advertising to facilitate attachment to products. You will grow brand recognition this way. Use good descriptive words like ?relief? and ?security?.

Video marketing is an ideal way to use the Internet to advertise. When your site or blog features a video, you have a stronger way to keep your customers?s focus on the site and your products. Enticing titles and unusual graphics can attract potential customers and may lead to increased sales.

People often do not believe everything they read in ads. This is not surprising, given that they?ve been dealing with deceptive advertising for years or even decades now. Therefore, you have to offer real proof for your claims on your site. You might include reviews, testimonials, before-and-after photos and test reports, for instance. Just do not say anything that you cannot back up. Treat your customers as intelligent and informed people. You should never take advantage of your customers. With honest, non-deceptive business practices, you?ll earn a good reputation and gain a core of loyal, repeat customers.

In conclusion, many businesses use Online marketing to sell products and services. Web marketing uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Online marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

Does Local Search SEO Matter For Small Business Marketing ...

When was the last time you went out to the theatre, or the cinema or indoor sky diving? Did you go there and then go straight home? Probably not, the chances are you probably stayed local and got a bite to eat or a drink. If you were super organised perhaps you searched Google before you left and typed in something like ?restaurants near theatre x?, ?places to eat by indoor skydiving centre?, or maybe you checked on your mobile while you were at the venue.

The point is that people are constantly looking for places, items of interest or things to buy in and around the vicinity of where they are. The question is, what are you doing as a business owner to capitalise on that?

Trying to go after the local search seo market for the keyword ?restaurant? is difficult, in fact it is very difficult. But targeting the keyword phrase ?restaurant in north Manchester? or ?restaurant near the playhouse theatre? might be more achievable. Plus, you have the added incentive of knowing that the searchers are highly targeted customers for your offer and (this maybe a positive for restaurateurs) those people will not spend all night in your restaurant as they have a show to catch meaning you will definitely have the table free for another party of guests.

So if you are keen to capitalise on local search seo traffic for your business then here are a few changes that you can make to get results.

1. Target the Right People

Until you know who you are targeting there is not much point doing SEO. What words are your potential customers using to find your business? Ask them! When people are in your store, restaurant or practice ask them what terms they used to find your business in the search engines. Ask them what search engines they used and ask them what other search terms they would enter into a search engine to find business similar to yours. Once you have a collected a good volume of results use Google?s free Keyword Tool to carry out keyword research and narrow down the result to the ones that are actually getting searches and use them for the basis of your SEO campaign.

2. Alter Your On Page Optimisation

On page optimisation is a process by where you tailor your copywriting, so the search engines can index them in the correct place and your targeted users can find them. To help them index your page in the right place, relevant to your keyword, make sure your keyword is prominently displayed in the title of the page.

By having your keywords in the title tag you will also be making sure that when targeted people land on the page they find exactly what they are searching for, resulting in increased conversions, phone calls, bookings and sales.

3. One Page, One Keyword

Even though ?Restaurants East Cheshire? maybe a keyword that you are targeting it should only be used on one page. If you have two or more pages optimised for the same keyword then the search engines will choose the page that it feels is more relevant and this may not be the page that you have optimised for conversions.

If you are not happy with the page that you have then either edit the page or delete it and start afresh leaving you with one targeted page per keyword.

4. Go into detail

Sticking with ?Restaurants East Cheshire?, in order to provide the search user with greater detail about the search you may consider providing a page on ?things to do in East Cheshire? or think about providing information on the specific town your are in, in this case you could do ?Italian restaurants in Crewe? or simply ?Italian restaurant?. The link is relevant to the search user and this is a great way of attracting targeted links back to your most important pages.

5. Add your address to every page.

Local SEO is all about getting people to convert into buyers or visitors to your local store. That being the case, make sure it is obvious where your store is by having your address on every page of your website. Make everything as easy as you can for the user to find your details and act upon them. It also reinforces your location to the search engines so when people are searching for localised information your pages should be indexed.

This is by no means a defacto list for optimising your website for local search SEO but by adopting these 5 principles you will definitely put your business on the map and be in a great position to capitalise on local people that are searching for your products.
