Of course we all know that all farms should only be used for growing vegetables because raising animals is bad for the environment, right?

Wrong.

This is exactly why. The only people who think that we should only grow vegetables are people who have only ever seen thousands of acres of rolling Iowa cornfields - much of which gets fed to cows. Most of the world doesn't use "feedlots" the way that the cattle industry in the US does. Most of the world isn't rolling Iowa cornfield, either.

The only thing that makes sense is to try to grow things that will actually thrive in the prevailing conditions. Trying to turn land that is not really suitable for arable crops into land that *is* suitable for arable crops is doomed to expensive failure. Now, the first problem with Africa is that cutting down forests to provide arable land has allowed what soil there was to wash or blow away, depending on whether it's getting deluged with rain or dried into powder with the sun. The first thing is not to worry too much about importing huge amounts of petrochemical-derived fertiliser, but to get irrigation working and grow green manure crops that will tie what little soil there is together, and provide some nutrients when they break down. The great thing about this is that you don't really care if the water is dirty - in fact, you *want* it to be a bit dirty, any sediment or sewage or dead animals will only make it work better. The more biomass you get in there, the better. Sure, it'll smell a bit horrible, but have you ever been near an organic farm when they're spreading the organic fertiliser out? Hint - you make organic fertiliser using cows, sheep and pigs.

A good solution would be to devise some way of processing sewage from towns into something that can be used as fertiliser. The difficulty is that allowing sewage to break down involves allowing human shit to break down, and that requires you to let bacteria multiply rapidly, and you tend to get predominantly E Coli bacteria when you do that. This isn't exactly what you want to fling onto your arable crops, and killing E Coli requires lots of chemicals or lots of heat. They've got a lot of sunshine, so maybe you could do something with that - a sort of solar steriliser to bake off the E Coli and give you a nice, dry, easy-to-handle compost.

Of course you're going to need to find some sort of livestock that thrive in these conditions, and goats do pretty well, but goats eat everything and will destroy ground-covering plants which is how we got into this mess in the first place. Hens would do pretty well, as long as you had a biggish grassy patch with plenty of bugs for them to eat. Cows would be good if you could get enough forage in for them initially, because there's nothing quite so good at turning poor grassland into fertile arable land as getting some sort of ruminant to eat the tough inedible grasses and pass them through that complex set of stomachs.

We can't afford the arable land for everyone to be vegetarian, and when the oil runs out the situation will get worse. We *all* need to plan now and act soon.

I noticed that under ranking on character profiles people are placing their role (i.e. Executive Officer, Pilot) rather than an actual military rank. I think it would be good for each player to be assigned a specific military rank before we begin. I think that the role of military society and behaviours will be a large factor in how characters interact with each other. For the moment I have assigned my character, a pilot, Flight Lieutenant status - assuming one of the GM's assigns ranks, this can be altered.

I will provide a list of military rankings for Naval officers (based on the Royal Navy) if anyone is unsure or interested, and Royal Air Force (for pilots)- on which note. I assume these are fighter pilots, as opposed to pilots for Demeter itself, which I wouldd think would be controlled by the bridges watch-standers and commanding officers?

INDIANAPOLIS A study by Regenstrief Institute and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs investigators provides the first in-depth look at how health care providers react to medication alerts generated by electronic medical record systems. The researchers plan to use this information to improve the design of medication alerts and diminish the phenomenon known as alert fatigue, where providers can become desensitized and may start unintentionally ignoring some important warnings.

For this study, the researchers observed providers as they treated patients to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of medication alerts.

Medication alerts provide the health care team with computer-generated information on a variety of drug-related issues. Among the most common medication alerts are warnings about patient allergies, drug interactions and duplicate prescriptions. The alerts, critical to patient safety, can be triggered by many factors including the prescription of a new medication or a change in a patient's laboratory test results.

But health care providers may experience alert fatigue and unintentionally overlook important alerts if the electronic medical record system generates too many medication alerts; if alerts do not apply to the patient (for example, warning about a drug the patient has already been taking without problems); or if the alert provides too much extra information. The goal is to develop alerts that aid healthcare providers more effectively and enhance patient safety.

"Prescribers' Interactions With Medication Alerts at the Point of Prescribing: A Multi-Method, In Situ Investigation of the Human-Computer Interaction" appears in the April 2012 issue of the International Journal of Medical Informatics.

"As a human factors research scientist, I am interested in learning how to improve the usability of electronic medical records systems so doctors, nurses and pharmacists can work more effectively. I also am interested in finding ways to make health care delivery safer for patients," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Alissa Russ, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. She is first author of the study and is an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University.

During the study, 320 medication alerts were generated by an electronic medical record system as 30 doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacists treated 146 patients in a variety of outpatient clinics. The study authors observed and analyzed factors that influenced how health care providers perceive, interpret and respond to alerts. The authors identified nine factors that influence prescribers as they encounter alerts, providing a detailed description of 44 components that contribute to these factors.

The researchers found that prescribers were sometimes unsure why an alert was appearing, and they also determined that alert designs were more pharmacist-oriented than physician- or nurse practitioner-oriented, in spite of the fact that doctors and nurse practitioners were the principal prescribers.

"Too many alerts and overly detailed alerts are a common source of frustration across electronic medical record systems," Dr. Russ said. "Unless we improve medication alerts so they contain information that users need to make decisions, the problem of alert fatigue will grow as EMR systems expand beyond single hospitals and share more data."

"When interface usability, workflow integration, and potential information overload are addressed, electronic medical records have a tremendous advantage over paper records, such as rapid accessibility by multiple providers, improved documentation, and implementation of computerized decision support, such as clinical reminders and medication alerts," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Jason J. Saleem, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at Roudebush VAMC. Senior author of the study, he is a human factors engineer specializing in the delivery of medicine care and an assistant research professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

All authors are with the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Dr. Zillich is an associate professor of pharmacy practice at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Doebbeling is a Regenstrief Institute investigator and professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The International Journal of Medical Informatics study was funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Currently Dr. Russ is leading a team that has created new, experimental designs for alerts based on these research findings. Redesigned alerts are being evaluated with simulated patient cases in the VA Health Services Research and Development's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the Roudebush VAMC.

The researchers plan to use this information to improve the design of medication alerts and diminish the phenomenon known as alert fatigue, where providers can become desensitized and may start unintentionally ignoring some important warnings.

For this study, the researchers observed providers as they treated patients to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of medication alerts.

Medication alerts provide the health care team with computer-generated information on a variety of drug-related issues. Among the most common medication alerts are warnings about patient allergies, drug interactions and duplicate prescriptions. The alerts, critical to patient safety, can be triggered by many factors including the prescription of a new medication or a change in a patient's laboratory test results.

But health care providers may experience alert fatigue and unintentionally overlook important alerts if the electronic medical record system generates too many medication alerts; if alerts do not apply to the patient (for example, warning about a drug the patient has already been taking without problems); or if the alert provides too much extra information. The goal is to develop alerts that aid healthcare providers more effectively and enhance patient safety.

"Prescribers' Interactions With Medication Alerts at the Point of Prescribing: A Multi-Method, In Situ Investigation of the Human-Computer Interaction" appears in the April 2012 issue of the International Journal of Medical Informatics.

"As a human factors research scientist, I am interested in learning how to improve the usability of electronic medical records systems so doctors, nurses and pharmacists can work more effectively. I also am interested in finding ways to make health care delivery safer for patients," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Alissa Russ, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. She is first author of the study and is an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University.

During the study, 320 medication alerts were generated by an electronic medical record system as 30 doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacists treated 146 patients in a variety of outpatient clinics. The study authors observed and analyzed factors that influenced how health care providers perceive, interpret and respond to alerts. The authors identified nine factors that influence prescribers as they encounter alerts, providing a detailed description of 44 components that contribute to these factors.

The researchers found that prescribers were sometimes unsure why an alert was appearing, and they also determined that alert designs were more pharmacist-oriented than physician- or nurse practitioner-oriented, in spite of the fact that doctors and nurse practitioners were the principal prescribers.

"Too many alerts and overly detailed alerts are a common source of frustration across electronic medical record systems," Dr. Russ said. "Unless we improve medication alerts so they contain information that users need to make decisions, the problem of alert fatigue will grow as EMR systems expand beyond single hospitals and share more data."

"When interface usability, workflow integration, and potential information overload are addressed, electronic medical records have a tremendous advantage over paper records, such as rapid accessibility by multiple providers, improved documentation, and implementation of computerized decision support, such as clinical reminders and medication alerts," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Jason J. Saleem, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at Roudebush VAMC. Senior author of the study, he is a human factors engineer specializing in the delivery of medicine care and an assistant research professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Co-authors of the study, along with Dr. Russ and Dr. Saleem are Alan J. Zillich, PharmD; M. Sue McManus, Ph.D., NP and Bradley N. Doebbeling, M.D., MSc. All authors are with the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Dr. Zillich is an associate professor of pharmacy practice at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Doebbeling is a Regenstrief Institute investigator and professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Currently Dr. Russ is leading a team that has created new, experimental designs for alerts based on these research findings. Redesigned alerts are being evaluated with simulated patient cases in the VA Health Services Research and Development's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the Roudebush VAMC.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), UK home insurance premiums are to rise as climate change is increasing the risk of flooding. Even some areas of the country are becoming uninsurable, due to the dramatic increase of flood risk. Worcester campaigner Mary Donhau said that home insurance premiums for now is more than ?5000, and this amount could increase further.

It is found that one in four homes is prone to risk of flooding, taking into account all forms, including river flooding, sewage water, ground water flooding etc. It is estimated that the risk of flooding in Herefordshire alone is very high, putting 8000 homes at risk.

The Association of British Insurers said that the damage caused by the floods in 2007 resulted to a cost of ?3 billion by the insurance industry. The Environmental Agency has completed 158 schemes since 2007, and it has increased protection to more than 128,000 properties.

It is quite seen that every year, the Environment Agency would need an additional ?20 million to invest in flood defenses. If the properties were granted planning approval against Environment Agency advice, then the insurance industry may not insure new developments in flood plain areas.
