Drinks maker Pernod Ricard's profit rises 10 pct

PARIS (AP) ? French beverage company Pernod Ricard said Thursday that its annual net profit increased 10 percent as its focus on Asia and premium brands delivered its best results since the global economic crisis began in 2008.

The company behind Absolut vodka and Mumm champagne said that its revenues grew 7 percent to ?8.2 billion ($10.3 billion). Its net profit was ?1.1 billion.

That figure, however, was slightly below analyst expectations of ?1.2 billion, and shares on the Paris bourse were down 1.4 percent in afternoon trading.

Unlike most companies, Pernod Ricard's fiscal year ends June 30.

Much of the company's growth is happening in Asia, where profit from recurring operations was up nearly 30 percent. That has offset struggling operations in western Europe, where the same measure fell 2 percent. The company, known for its anise-flavored liqueurs, said crisis-hit countries like Spain, Greece and Italy are responsible for that decrease.

Its home market of France also clocked a decline in profit and sales, although some of that can be attributed to an increase in an excise duty that took effect Jan. 1 and pummeled results in the first half of 2012.

Just as luxury retailers like LVMH Moet Hennessy have thrived during the economic crisis, thanks largely to robust demand from developing markets, Pernod Ricard has grown by doubling down on its premium brands, which now account for 73 percent of its sales, up two percentage points from last year.

CEO Pierre Pringuet said he was confident the company would grow again in 2012-2013 but wouldn't give precise expectations until the end of the first quarter.

The company also announced a new chairwoman of the board, Daniele Ricard. She takes over from her brother Patrick, who died earlier this month. Patrick Ricard transformed his father's small pastis purveyor into a global beverage company when he took over as chairman and CEO in 1978.

Patrick Ricard's nephew, Alexandre, was named deputy CEO and will take over from Pringuet when he retires in 2015.

Federal court rejects new Texas voter photo ID law

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? A tough Texas law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls discriminates against low-income blacks and Hispanics, a federal court ruled Thursday, wiping out for the November election a measure championed by conservatives and setting up a potential U.S. Supreme Court showdown.

In Washington, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the 2011 law imposes "strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor" and noted that Texas' racial minorities are more likely to live in poverty.

It was the state's second major loss in court in three days, coming after a separate federal panel ruled Tuesday that Texas' Republican-dominated Legislature failed to avoid "discriminatory purposes" when drawing new maps for congressional districts and both houses of the state Legislature to reflect the Texas' booming population.

The voter ID decision could set a precedent for upcoming legal challenges to similar laws in other states. South Carolina's strict photo ID law is on trial this week in front of another three-judge panel in the same federal courthouse. A ruling in that case is expected before the November election.

It also underscores a widespread push, largely by Republican-controlled legislatures and governors' offices, to impose strict identification requirements on voters. But Democrats say fraud at the polls is largely nonexistent and that Republicans are trying to disenfranchise minorities, poor people and college students ? all groups that tend to vote Democratic.

State Attorney General Greg Abbott said he will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, "where we are confident we will prevail." He pointed to past decisions upholding similar "ballot integrity safeguards" in Georgia and Indiana.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry said, "Chalk up another victory for fraud."

"Today, federal judges subverted the will of the people of Texas," he said, "and undermined our effort to ensure fair and accurate elections."

A report by the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan legal think tank in New York, determined that new voting restrictions could suppress the votes of more than 5 million young, minority, low-income and disabled voters nationwide. And election administrators and academics who monitor the issue say generally that in-person fraud is rare because someone would have to impersonate a registered voter and risk arrest.

During the Texas voter ID case, the Justice Department called several lawmakers, all of them Democrats, who said they detected a clear racial motive in the push for the law. Lawyers for Texas argued that the state was simply tightening its laws. Texas called experts who demonstrated that voter ID laws had a minimal effect on turnout, and Republican state lawmakers testified that the legislation was the result of a popular demand for more election protections.

The voter ID judges were Rosemary Collyer, an appointee of former President George W. Bush; Robert Wilkins, an appointee of President Barack Obama; and David Tatel, an appeals court judge appointed by Bill Clinton.

Tatel, writing for the panel, called the Texas law "the most stringent in the nation." He said it would impose a heavier burden on voters than a similar law in Indiana, previously upheld by the Supreme Court, and one in Georgia, which the Justice Department allowed to take effect without objection.

Thursday's decision spelled out what Texas could do to soften its voter ID law and eventually be upheld in court ? but Abbott's decision to appeal means Texas may be looking for a larger Supreme Court battle regarding the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Under Section 5 of the act, Texas and all or parts of 15 other states must obtain clearance from the Justice Department's civil rights division or a federal court before carrying out changes in elections. The states are mostly in the South and all have a history of discriminating against blacks, American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives or Hispanics.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that the voter ID ruling and "the decision earlier this week on the Texas redistricting plans not only reaffirm ? but help protect ? the vital role the Voting Rights Act plays in our society to ensure that every American has the right to vote and to have that vote counted."

Last December, South Carolina's voter ID requirement became the first such law to be rejected by the Justice Department in nearly 20 years. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said the attorney general made a "very serious error" by blocking it.

In 2011, new voter ID laws passed in Kansas, Mississippi, Rhode Island and Wisconsin, while Alabama and Tennessee tightened existing voter ID laws to require photo ID. Governors in Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire and North Carolina vetoed such laws.

This year, Pennsylvania enacted its own law and voting-rights groups are appealing to the state Supreme Court. And in Wisconsin, a county judge ruled in July that the state's new photo ID law impairs the right to vote. In an appeal, Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen argues the law doesn't impose an undue burden because voters can get free state ID cards.

?The knock-on effect was seen for at least five years after the diet ended,? Rolland added.

Republican convention is in full-throated roar

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to connect with critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

Romney himself was ducking out of his own convention in Tampa to address the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the round of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" event.

His nomination now official, Romney was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said on "CBS This Morning."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

The main draw Wednesday night is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money. A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

President Barack Obama, for his part, was courting another key voting group ? young voters ? with a second day of campaigning in college towns. He had hoped to speak on the University of Virginia campus, but the school rejected that idea, saying it would disrupt classes on the second day of the semester. He'll speak in an off-campus pavilion instead.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, casting uncertainty into a convention that scrubbed the first day of events out of fear it would swipe Tampa. Any scenes of destruction along the Gulf Coast were sure to temper the celebratory tone, and further compression of the schedule was possible if the storm proved disastrous.

The latest economic news suggested weak growth in the second half of the year, fodder for Republicans who blame Obama for the sluggish recovery. The U.S. economy grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the government reported Wednesday, a bit better than expected due to slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The GOP's outreach effort went into full gear after Ann Romney offered convention delegates ? and a national TV audience ? a soft-sided portrayal of the Republican candidate in her convention address. Her appearance was paired with a parade of gleeful Obama-bashers as the GOP seized its moment after days of worry about the hurricane.

Beyond Ryan, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rubio held out Ryan as a "serious policy thinker" who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

The Obama campaign, in turn, released an online video targeting Ryan as a politician from a "bygone era" whose views threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

Rice, warming up for her speech, said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment. She spoke on "CBS This Morning."

Opinion polls, however, show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

The convention's keynote speaker, the unpredictable New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, issued a broad indictment of Democrats on Tuesday as "disciples of yesterday's politics" who "whistle a happy tune" while taking the country off a fiscal cliff.

"It's time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House," he said. "Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to put us back on the path to growth and create good-paying, private-sector jobs again in America."

Romney made his debut at the convention two days before his own speech, rousing the crowd into cheers as he took the stage briefly to share a kiss with his wife after she spoke. Ann Romney's prime-time speech was in large measure an outreach to female voters as she declared her husband "will not let us down" if elected president.

Her tone was intimate as she spoke about the struggles of working families: "If you listen carefully, you'll hear the women sighing a little bit more than the men. It's how it is, isn't it? It's the moms who always have to work a little harder, to make everything right."

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

In her own effort to woo female voters, first lady Michelle Obama traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said: "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama. However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, while 27 percent said Romney.

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian opposition leader claims that President Vladimir Putin is spending billions of taxpayers' rubles on 20 luxurious residences, 43 jets and four yachts.

All heads of state use government property and funds for presentation purposes, but Boris Nemtsov says that Putin's lifestyle is far more lavish than that of his Western counterparts.

In the report released Tuesday, Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, estimates that the maintenance of Putin's residences, jets and cars alone costs $2.5 billion a year.

Nemtsov says Putin has been "mistaking government property for his own" for years.

The report is based largely on news reports and includes numerous photographs, including of Putin's collection of exquisite wristwatches worth a total of about $700,000.

The Liberty Institute and the Family Research Council have published a 135-page report documenting lawsuits and other acts that have exhibited hostility towards the free exercise of religion.

?While by no means exhaustive, this survey now presents over 600 incidents of religious attacks and hostility in the United States -- most of which occurred within the past 10 years.?

For instance, the report cites a case in which

school officials at Foothill High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, told valedictorian Brittany McComb that she could not mention God or Jesus in her valedictorian address. When McComb did so anyway, the school officials turned off her microphone. McComb sued the school for violating her free speech rights, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found that the school district did not violate her constitutional rights.

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? Mitt Romney suggested Monday that he's not considering canceling the Republican National Convention even as New Orleans faces another powerful storm on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Asked Monday whether he had any message for the people of New Orleans, Romney said: "Our thoughts are with the people that are in the storm's path and hope that they're spared any major destruction."

But when asked whether he was considering canceling the convention, Romney replied: "We've got a great convention ahead." The gathering already has been trimmed to three days, from four, because of the weather in the Tampa, Fla., area.

A strengthening Tropical Storm Isaac was expected to become a hurricane and possibly hit late Tuesday between the Louisiana bayous and the Florida Panhandle. The storm's arrival would coincide with the seven-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the region in August 2005.

Romney briefly addressed reporters Monday morning as he and his wife, Ann, entered a high school auditorium near his New Hampshire summer home to rehearse his convention speech. Ann Romney is scheduled to address the convention on Tuesday night, while Romney will speak Thursday night.

The former Massachusetts governor struck an optimistic tone as he left the school, and suggested things were "terrific" in Tampa, where the weather was rain-free, partly sunny and breezy.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech," Romney said, his wife at his side. "Our sons are already in Tampa and they say it's terrific there ? a lot of great friends. And we're looking forward to a great convention."

He was all smiles when reporters asked for a preview of the speech.

"Uh, thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Romney said with a laugh before climbing into his SUV.

The weather situation is a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

"It is what it is," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Monday morning, suggesting that the GOP still can present a compelling argument for Romney despite the storm and the compressed schedule.

"Obviously we want to pray for anyone that's in the pathway of this storm but the message is still the same: that all Americans deserve a better future and that this president ... didn't keep the promises he made in 2008," Priebus said on NBC's "Today."

Romney has no public events scheduled Monday.

Comedic actor Bob Odenkirk has appeared on one of TV's most intense dramas for four seasons now as flashy criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, who represents Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul).

While promoting "Breaking Bad" on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor gushed about late comedian Chris Farley.

"Chris was very genuine," said Odenkirk, who has appeared on "Saturday Night Live" and written for "The Ben Stiller Show" and "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." "A lot of people in showbiz do that, and they're faking it... but Chris was absolutely, genuinely a sweet guy."

Speaking two languages also benefits low-income children

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Living in poverty is often accompanied by conditions that can negatively influence cognitive development. Is it possible that being bilingual might counteract these effects? Although previous research has shown that being bilingual enhances executive functioning in middle-class children, less is known about how it affects lower income populations.

In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Pascale Engel de Abreu of the University of Luxembourg and colleagues examine the effects of speaking two languages on the executive functioning of low-income children.

"Low-income children represent a vulnerable population," says Engel de Abreu. "Studying cognitive processes in this population is of great societal importance and represents a significant advancement in our understanding of childhood development."

Existing research, conducted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults from middle class backgrounds, suggests that knowing two languages may have different effects on different aspects of executive functioning: while being bilingual seems to have a positive influence on the ability to direct and focus attention (control), researchers have found no such benefit for how people encode and structure knowledge in memory (representation).

Engel de Abreu and her colleagues hypothesized that this pattern would also hold for younger bilingual children who were low-income.

A total of 80 second graders from low-income families participated in the study. Half of the children were first or second generation immigrants to Luxembourg, originally from Northern Portugal, who spoke both Luxembourgish and Portuguese on a daily basis. The other half of the children lived in Northern Portugal and spoke only Portuguese.

The researchers first tested the children's vocabularies by asking them to name items presented in pictures. Both groups completed the task in Portuguese and the bilingual children also completed the task in Luxembourgish.

To examine how the children represented knowledge in memory, the researchers asked them to find a missing piece that would complete a specific geometric shape. The researchers also measured the children's memory, using two different tasks to see how much visual information the children could keep in mind at a given time.

The children then participated in two tasks that looked at their ability to direct and focus their attention when distractions were present. In the first task, they had to find and match 20 pairs of spacecrafts as quickly as possible, a task that depended on their ability to ignore all the non-matching spacecrafts. In the second task, the children were presented with a row of yellow fish on a computer screen and they had to press a button to indicate which direction the fish in the center was facing. The other fish either pointed in the same or opposite direction of the fish in the middle.

Although the bilingual children knew fewer words than their monolingual peers, and did not show an advantage for representation tasks, they performed better on the control tasks than did the monolingual children, just as the researchers hypothesized.

"This is the first study to show that, although they may face linguistic challenges, minority bilingual children from low-income families demonstrate important strengths in other cognitive domains," says Engel de Abreu.

The researchers believe that the findings could inform efforts to reduce the achievement gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds. "Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."

Dallas, TX ? People with blood type A, B, or AB had a higher risk for coronary heart disease when compared to those with blood type O, according to new research published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association journal.

People in this study with the rarest blood type ? AB, found in about 7 percent of the U.S. population ? had the highest increased heart disease risk at 23 percent. Those with type B had an 11 percent increased risk, and those with type A had a 5 percent increased risk. About 43 percent of Americans have type O blood.

?While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk for developing heart disease,? said Lu Qi, M.D., Ph.D., the study?s senior author and an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Knowing your blood type can be an important part of staying healthy and avoiding heart disease, Qi said. ?It?s good to know your blood type the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers,? he said. ?If you know you?re at higher risk, you can reduce the risk by adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as eating right, exercising and not smoking.?

The findings are based on an analysis of two large, well-known U.S. studies ? 62,073 women from the Nurses? Health Study and 27,428 adults from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants were between ages 30 and 75, and both groups were followed for 20 years or more.

Researchers also considered the study participants? diet, age, body mass index, gender, race, smoking status, menopause status and medical history. Researchers noted that the percentages of different blood types seen among the men and women enrolled in the two studies reflected levels seen in the general population.

The study did not evaluate the biological processes behind blood type and heart disease risk.

?Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play,? Qi said.

However, there is evidence suggesting that type A is associated with higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the waxy substance that can clog arteries, and type AB is linked to inflammation, which may affect the function of the blood vessels. Also, a substance that plays a favorable role in blood flow and clotting may be higher in people with type O blood.

Understanding blood type could help healthcare providers better tailor treatments, Qi suggested. For example, a patient with type A blood may best lower heart disease risk by decreasing cholesterol intake.

The study group was predominantly Caucasian, and it?s not clear whether these findings would translate to other ethnic groups. Environment also contributes to risk, Qi said.

?It would be interesting to study whether people with different blood types respond differently to lifestyle intervention, such as diet,? Qi said, noting that further analysis is needed.
